Internal Family Systems

through a queer, trans, & neurodivergent-affirming lens

What to Expect

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative and evidence-supported form of parts-work. IFS can be hugely supportive for everything from complex trauma to grief to “why do I keep engaging in patterns that aren’t working for me?” The process of IFS encourages self-compassion and integration of Self.

❋ Complex Trauma

IFS offers a gentle and effective way of caring for the parts of ourselves that can become fragmented through complex trauma— particularly the protective or vulnerable parts that emerge from pain, but may not serve us as we grow and evolve.

❋ LGBT+ Affirming IFS

LGBTQIA2S+ affirming IFS honors the dignity and validity of queer and trans identities. Gender and sexuality can shape different parts of our lives and ourselves, but these identities are not “parts” of self that need to be changed. IFS can be supportive in addressing the impacts of queerphobia and transphobia on our sense of self and well-being.

❋ Neurodivergence Affirming IFS

Neurodivergence-affirming IFS recognizes that neurotypes are not a “part” of self that needs to be integrated or “fixed.” However, the experience of navigating the world as a neurodivergent individual -including masking and cultural ableism- can lead to the formation of protective parts and vulnerable parts that may benefit from support and integration.

❋ Indigenous Roots of Parts-Work

Parts-work originated in indigenous and animist traditions that embrace the multiplicity of human experience . IFS is one application of parts-work , but it is far from the first.
